R22 - Emergency Procedures

If uncommanded pitch, roll or yaw resulting from flight in turbulence is encountered in flight:

apply controls as necessary to maintain control

minimize cyclic control input in turbulence

increase collective to maintain positive climb

In-adverted encounter with moderate turbulence

Continue flight, the helicopter is well with in limits

Depart the area or land as soon as practical

Land immediately

LOW RPM horn & CAUTION light:

roll throttle on, lower collective and in forward flight apply aft cyclic

apply aft cyclic

lower collective

Loss of tail rotor thrust during forward flight:

Maintain at least 70 KIAS if practical

Maintain at least 60 KIAS if practical

Maintain at least 85 KIAS if practical

The pilot notices during flight that the auxiliary tank is approaching “Empty”, while there is still lots of fuel in the main tank. Given that the pilot remembers from ground school that the two tanks are interconnected, she is very worried.

He should relax; the situation is to be expected.

There might be a fuel leak in the Auxiliary tank. The pilot should monitor the main tank fuel quantity and land.

The Auxiliary tank gauge has failed and the flight should continue.

Fire in-flight:

Land as soon as practical

If engine is running shut-off fuel valve and execute autorotation immediately

If engine stops running, shut-off fuel valve and execute autorotation landing

Ditching – power on; after contact with water:

apply rotor brake to stop blades from rotating

apply right lateral cyclic to stop blades from rotating

apply left lateral cyclic to stop blades from rotating

The procedure to adopt when the tail rotor fails is:

Neither

Autorotate

Flyslow

Power failure above 500 FT AGL, begin cyclic flare to reduce rate of descent and forward speed

At about 40 ft AGL

At about 35 ft AGL

At about 45 ft AGL

If the engine governor malfunctions

grip throttle firmly to override the governor

let the governor to correct the problem

land immediately
